What Franklin's Storms Mean for a Metal Roof

Metal handles weather differently than shingles. Here's what Franklin has seen recently and what we check afterward:

  • Hail — On May 26, 2024, the National Weather Service logged hail up to 3 inches wide in Williamson County (NWS), and on May 20, 2025, golf ball to baseball-sized hail hit the county again (WKRN). Large hail can dent metal panels and damage the paint finish even when the roof stays watertight.
  • Wind — On August 12, 2023, an EF-0 tornado with 75 mph winds touched down northeast of downtown Franklin (NWS). After high wind we check panel seams, ridge caps, and trim for anything lifted or loosened.
  • Ice and Falling Limbs — The January 2026 ice storm dropped trees across Franklin roads (FOX 17). A falling limb can crease a panel or tear a seam, and that needs repair before water gets under it.

If your metal roof went through one of these storms, a roof inspection in Franklin shows whether it needs anything.

Metal Roofs in Franklin's Historic District

Standing-seam metal is one of the roof materials the City of Franklin's Historic District Design Guidelines name as historically compatible, alongside asphalt, wood, and slate. For additions and accessory buildings, the guidelines also list 5V metal.

In the Historic Preservation Overlay District, roofing alterations other than in-kind repair still need Historic Zoning Commission approval, so check with the city's preservation staff before changing a roof.
